Squeegee Painting?

I follow a lot of other artists and makers online, which keeps me constantly inspired to make and experiment with new creative outlets. My latest obsession is Clara Cristina. She is a Brazilian artist living in Germany, and she does incredible work with acrylics and inks, and has a serious handle on the use of squeegees to create prismatic colorful effects. After seeing her work and a few others online I just HAD to give it a try. So! Below is a quick tutorial I in which show you how I set up one of my squeegee paintings, and some tips I’ve learned throughout practicing. Also, be sure to follow Clara Cristina and her work over on Instagram @aclaracris.

I’ve always been an acrylic painter. It’s water-based, durable, dries quickly, and comes in a massive range or ready-to-use colors, making painting affordable and manageable for all. And that’s whether you paint with a brush, your hands, gravity, or a squeegee! Squeegees have been long used for other creative purposes, but most notably for letterpress, printmaking, and screen printing, which is where this technique originates. Practice and patience are key, and results will always vary, which is kind of fun!

Following along? Great! Supplies for the tutorial include: watercolor paper (140lbs preferred), acrylic craft paint in 3-5 colors, painters tape, scrap paper, a squeegee, piece of stiff board, or a plastic ruler. And if you have small nozzle tips for your paint, that could be super helpful!
